2021 saw the release of ONE OK ROCK’s singles “Wonder,” “Broken Heart of Gold,” and “Renegades,” the latter of which they co-wrote with international superstar Ed Sheeran. The band also released their Netflix documentary “Flip A Coin,” which gives fans a backstage look at intimate moments from their massive 2020 “Field of Wonder” livestream concert held at ZOZOMARINE Stadium in Chiba, Japan.
ONE OK ROCK’s widely acclaimed 2019 album EYE OF THE STORM established the band as a global force, featuring the singles “Stand Out Fit In,” “Wasted Nights,” and “Change.” Comprised of vocalist Taka, guitarist Toru, drummer Tomoya, and bassist Ryota, ONE OK ROCK is among Japan’s most popular and beloved rock outfits, with each of their last six releases debuting in the nation’s Top 5, including the #1 blockbusters, 35xxxv, AMBITIONS, and EYE OF THE STORM.
You Me At Six
Seven albums in, You Me at Six are as restless as ever, maybe more so. After a decade as one of Britain’s most prolific, best-loved bands, the Surrey quintet should have little left to prove. In fact, the opposite applies.
“We need to show people why we’re still here,” says singer Josh Franceschi. “Yes, we’re hungry for more success, but what matters now is how we achieve it. Where do we go that we haven’t been before? How do we challenge ourselves as well as our fans? What does it mean to be in this band?”
Never ones to tread water, in recent years, You Me at Six have become bolder and more experimental, shedding their indie-rock skin to delve into dance, R&B and hip hop and producing much of their music themselves. On SUCKAPUNCH, their explosive, shapeshifting seventh album, they went up a gear again, culminating in a No.1. Some of the songs tread entirely new territory, others twist rock into fresh forms. All of it springs surprises.
“We were wary of being called culture vultures, but in fact, that fusion is exactly us now. I haven’t listened to much guitar music for years, Dan is obsessed with dance, some of us love R&B. We’re still a rock band at heart, but somehow, we manage to make all of those influences slot together. It’s not forced, it’s just us.”
“Let’s say it’s a development of our tastes as musicians,” adds Max. “It’s what we grew up on-meets-what we listen to now. We’ve grown up and we want to showcase that in our music. If it excites us it should excite our fans, not only the ones we have already, but the ones who are going to hear SUCKAPUNCH and think, Really? This is You Me at Six? I had no idea.”
Fame On Fire
Fame On Fire is genre-defying and pushing the boundaries of rock, hip hop, and heavy music, by unapologetically being themselves. Unpretentious, honest, and boldly brash, Fame On Fire has delivered a diverse, energetic, and emotionally-wrenching collection of songs for their debut album, LEVELS. Holding multiple meanings, LEVELS, is both about going through the motions of life, the various levels, ups and downs that all people can relate to, and about the quest to level-up and continue to progress and move forward. This dichotomy defines a band that is not willing to stand still or be complacent, but one that continuously tries to evolve their sound and craft.
Leaving absolutely nothing on the table, Fame On Fire self-produced, tracked, and mixed the album on their own, in the studio they built, laboring over every lyric, chord, beat, and riff, and painstakingly polishing every track. On “Her Eyes” – the band’s first #1 song on Sirius XM Octane – singer Bryan Kuznitz explores the turmoil of surviving an emotionally abusive relationship with the brutal honesty of someone who wants to push through any challenge and remains hopeful in getting to the other side.
It is this hopefulness that ultimately prevails in an album that doesn’t shy away from themes of anguish, loss, and toxicity in relationships and life. Whether it be fighting demons and breaking out of the internal prison of the mind in “HEADSPACE FT. POORSTACY” or swimming consciously through a downward spiral in “Down,” Fame On Fire paints a visceral portrait of the uneven journey of life that we all go through and that we can all get through together. Through the darkness comes a flicker of hope that shines through to a new day.
With LEVELS, Fame On Fire set out to show how important music is for the band and their fans. According to guitarist, Blake Saul, “Our band exists because all of us grew up together and we each found our own ways to music, which is living and breathing inside of us.” LEVELS proves that Fame On Fire is ready to help define a new era of rock music. Just don’t call Fame On Fire a cover band.
Fame On Fire is: Bryan Kuznitz (Vocalist), Blake Saul (Guitarist), Alex Roman (Drummer), Paul Spirou (Bassist)
