Meshuggah
Few bands have altered the vocabulary of heavy music as fundamentally as MESHUGGAH. For nearly four decades, the Swedish quintet have pursued one of the most distinctive and uncompromising paths in modern heavy music. Through an obsessive command of rhythm, dissonance, repetition and dynamics, MESHUGGAH have created a body of work whose impact stretches far beyond the boundaries of extreme metal. Their music has inspired generations of musicians, reshaped the vocabulary of progressive and technical metal and spawned countless attempts to decode, imitate and expand upon ideas that the band themselves have continued to push relentlessly forward.
Yet despite that enormous influence, MESHUGGAH have always remained unmistakably themselves.
The current lineup of vocalist Jens Kidman, guitarists Fredrik Thordendal and Mårten Hagström, bassist Dick Lövgren and drummer Tomas Haake represents a musical entity whose individual components have become inseparable from its identity. Kidman’s commanding, percussive vocal delivery; Thordendal’s alien, jazz-inflected leads; Hagström’s monumental rhythmic architecture; Lövgren’s grounding low-end weight; and Haake’s extraordinary ability to make seemingly impossible rhythmic structures feel both mechanical and profoundly human have combined to create a sound without parallel.
Nearly four decades after their formation, MESHUGGAH remain one of the rare bands whose influence is matched by their continued relevance. They are elder statesmen of a musical language they largely invented, but they have never behaved like a heritage act. Their catalogue continues to reveal new details; their live performances retain their formidable intensity; and their presence continues to loom over virtually every conversation about rhythm and innovation in contemporary metal.
In 2026, there is value in looking back. The anniversaries demand it. But MESHUGGAH have never spent very long facing in that direction.
History suggests that periods of apparent stillness are rarely empty. Somewhere behind the machinery, another process is always taking shape: ideas being tested, structures dismantled, possibilities examined.
What form that next evolution might take remains characteristically unknown. For
MESHUGGAH, it could hardly be otherwise. As one chapter is celebrated, attention inevitably begins to turn toward the next.
2027 awaits.
