Lewis Capaldi has the kind of voice that needs little accompaniment to create an unforgettable impact. On his full-length debut Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent, the Scottish singer/songwriter offers up a dozen songs showcasing his raw yet mesmerizing vocal presence, along with the graceful piano work and introspective songwriting that recently led to his nomination for the 2019 BRIT Awards Critics’ Choice prize. Featuring the hit single “Someone You Loved”—a timelessly poignant track that spent seven weeks at No. 1 in the U.K.—the album endlessly reveals Capaldi’s rare gift for capturing love’s complexity in the most simply arranged songs and understated melodies.
Having recently toured with the likes of Sam Smith, Niall Horan, and Rag’n’Bone Man, Capaldi makes a point of instilling that sense of fun into his live show—an undeniably joyful experience, despite the heavy-hearted nature of so many of his songs. “As I was working on the album, one of the main things I kept thinking about was whether I’d have a good time playing these songs live,” Capaldi says. “People might come to my shows expecting it to be very serious, but really I just talk a lot of absolute nonsense and try to connect with the audience like they’re my pals. I’m not up there saying, ‘Here’s another one about a girl who broke my heart’—it’s always much more like, ‘Let’s all just have a laugh, and sing some really sad songs together.’”
