Oakland School of the Arts

The Fox Theater is proud to provide a permanent home for the Oakland School of the Arts. The mission of the school is to create a learning environment that fosters excellence in the arts and education. OSA’s goal is that all students graduate with a range of options to continue their academic and artistic pursuits in the nation’s top universities and conservatory arts programs. OSA is ranked among the top 5 performing public secondary schools in the City of Oakland. OSA’s Academic Performance Index (API) scores consistently outperform a majority of those in the Oakland Unified School District. OSA seeks to position itself as a model, so that other schools that serve comparable demographics may achieve similar performance gains.

Friends of the Fox

Friends of the Oakland Fox began in 1998 as a subcommittee of the Oakland Heritage Alliance (OHA). OHA was concerned about the deteriorating state of the theater: there was a leaky roof causing damage to the interior of the theater, mushrooms growing on the carpet, and homeless people camped inside the building. OHA organized a media tour of the Fox and helped generate enough interest in the theater's plight that the City of Oakland replaced the roof and began focusing in earnest on strategies for developing the theater.

CA Commercial Investments

Phil Tagami, managing partner of California Commercial Investments, was a driving force behind the financing and rehabilitation of the Fox Theater. Throughout the past several years, he has promoted the vision of transforming the theater into a live performance venue and permanent home for the Oakland School of Arts. Under Mr. Tagami’s leadership, $57 million has been raised from a dozen sources, including construction financing from Bank of America.
